Kids at school, Temple of the Sun, Central Square and Pachacuteq Monument, Day 6

Here is a hilarious Cusco video which will make anyone smile:
Lama rides in a cab

This morning, I went to school with my homestay mama Zenaida, she is a language teacher at Santa Rosa School where four of our kiddos are this week.  I was able to spend a few minutes with them this morning before class and they had rapid fire stories of their families and what they've been doing.  They all said it was scary for the first hour or so, then they felt right at home.  I was able to sit in the same language class with Matteo and they were learning about presenting in front of an audience.  After a handful of kids presented their narratives, they worked in small groups to write a new narrative from the point of view of an animal, which they presented to the class.  What a treat.

After class ended, I headed out for a wander in Cusco old town.  Imagine 500 year old Spanish architecture built on top of 800 year old Incan foundations.  The Temple of the Sun or the House of the Sun, is Qorikancha, pronounced Coricancha, was built by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui using the finest stone work called ashlar masonry and was highly labor intensive.  The Inca Imperial powers mobilized huge labor forces as displays of their power.  The Spanish Conquistadors destroyed most of the temple in the 16th century war, yet the foundations of the temple remain, on which was built the Church of Santo Domingo, taking about 100 years to construct.  The Spanish reported the Inca opulence was "fabulous beyond belief" with walls covered in gold sheets and gold statues in the courtyard.  The Spanish took the gold as ransom for the life of the Incan leader Atahualpa.  The following pictures are from the Temple of the Sun.  info digested from Wikipedia.

The Central Square is a huge area lined with shops, restaurants and great people watching.  Every direction is filled with incredible architecture and tourists.  Our hotel the first two nights in Cusco was near this square.

Finally, the Monument to Pachacuteq, or Pachacuti is significant because he transformed the kingdom of Cusco into the Incan Empire and most archaeologists believe Machu Picchu was built as an estate for him.  In Quechua, pronounced kechwa, his name translates to "he who overturns space and time" and also "earth shaker."  Supposedly, he lived for 125 years, of which he ruled and built the Inca Empire for 103 of those years.  The following pictures are from the monument.  info digested from Wikipedia and the interpretive signs in the monument.
